... and why is it so important?
Every breath we take, every move we make... so goes the song. Yet every move we make does depend on every breath we take and every drink (or meal) we take, because our movement is fueled by energy that we store in the body. We receive our energy from the triune sources of air, food and water. Energy doesn't just 'drop' out of the air, food or water that we ingest. In its usual form it is not chemically available. It can't always be called upon to support every move we make because it is not always ready for chemical reaction. For any chemical reaction to occur there needs to be two molecules involved, and each of these molecules must have something to 'trade', in the form of compatible atoms that are either positively or negatively charged. Positively charged molecules (and the atoms within them) will easily and naturally unite with negatively charged molecules of equivalent and compatible charge. Put simply, all of your body functions rely on the energy released from the unity of the 'charge' of the molecules in it and the opposite 'charge' in food water or air that enters it. So what is an ion? An ion is any atom that has a positive or a negative charge. A positively charged ion will seek a negatively charged one to unite with, have a glorious 'coupling' and then turn into something totally new and available. So why do we rave on so much about negative ions? Because the result of every move you move (a net spending of energy) is a positively charged body. The molecules in your body are left holding a positive charge. They are unavailable for future 'couplings' unless we get a new batch of attractive and giving negative ions in quickly. As we hear so often these days, things ain't what they used to be. The air is different. Putting it very frankly and unscientifically, it's full of crud. Positively charged crud. Nothing ever 'goes away' on our little green planet and every exhaust, every chimney plume, every cow fart, stays within our thin and fragile ionosphere. It stays in the air we gulp as we run along the beach, it stays in the water we drink, and it stays in the food we eat. And all of it this pollution is useless for energy production within the body. The air we breath in our garden , only 500 meters from the beach, contains only around 150 negative ions/cc/sec. but it also contains around 700 positive ions. This means that even as we lay on the beach doing absolutely nothing, our bodies are getting short-shifted by 2000 (required) plus 700 positive less 150 negative ions = 2550 ions/cc/second. Because the environment can no longer supply our basics , our bodies have to negatively ionize the air, water and food that enters our bodies just to get bare minimum ionization needs, and lying there in the sun, they are working non-stop just to supply enough available energy for us to get up off the sand and walk to the car! Did we always have to do this? No. We have managed to take our beautiful planet from garden paradise to technotrash in less than a century, and we have done one helluva 'good' job. Where once clear air and spring or glacial water gave us all the negative ions we needed, today the same basics actually rob our bodies of energy. Like the idea of drinking pure rainwater? Don't . It robs you of electrons. It is also acidic, having combined with CO 2 and pollutants as it falls from the clouds, and so it only contributes to the acidic state of your body. Want to go to the beach and reinvigorate on pure ocean air? That air just blew all the way from a Brazilian chemical factory and now it's your turn to breath it in. So we are suffocating in our air, drying up in our water, and toxifying as we eat our clean supermarket food. In a radical state, radical action is required - and we are indeed in a radical state of personal bodily survival. We have lost the negative ions, the life energy we need to even breathe freely. It's not hard to understand how we age the way we do. Suddenly we are old and we wonder how it happened. Yet it's been happening for years because every day our wonderful, amazing bodies have been slugging it out and losing the battle to keep aging at bay. Instead of performing daily housekeeping functions, it is flat out ionizing water food and air to make it energetically available for energy storage. The Chinese adepts well knew the power of this ionization process . They call the energy in the body chi , and they say it comes from the air, from water and from food. In his book The Tao of Health, Sex and Longevity , author and longevity expert Daniel Reid says, "Since there exists no equivalent term in English for ' Chi' or ' Prana' , we shall refer to it as 'bionic ' or ' bioelectric ' energy. This combines the idea of living energy uniquely associated with living organisms (bio-) with that of electricity (-electric) and negatively charged ions (-ionic).." In 1838, deHufeland wrote in The Art of Prolonging the Life of Man, "A careful study of the phenomena of the vital force in the organized world leads us to recognize in it the following properties ands laws: the vital force is the most subtle, most penetrating, most invisible agent we have known until now in nature ; in this respect it surpasses even light, electricity and magnetism, with which in other respects it seems to have the greatest analogy...We find a striking analogy between the vital force and magnetism. The life force can exist in a free and latent state, and in this respect has a close analogy to heat and electricity." More recently, French Scientist Dr J. Belot said, "When we consider organic life in the light of biophysics, we find that electrical phenomena are at the root of all cellular life and we conclude that the end of everything is an electrical charge." In March 1968, 36 years ago, Le Monde reported that the presence of negative ions or ionization facilitates oxygen absorption, aids elimination of CO2 in the alveoli of the lungs, yet positive ions have precisely the opposite effect. Gases, dust, chemical fumes, all enter the body as positive ions, trapping the tiny negative ions in their large absorbent form, rendering your air technically 'dead'. When we read the work of Dr Otto Warburg, Nobel Scientist, we begin to understand the absolute importance not only of oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, but the utter importance for our longevity of their entry into the body in negatively charged form . We also begin to see the extent of the effect of common-use substances. A plastic seat (I am sitting on one now!) will accelerate mental fatigue, as will plastic wall coverings. Objects covered in polyethylene produce fields of between 5 and 10,000 volts/meter. In a space enclosed by polyethylene the rate can skyrocket to 100,000 volts/meter . Certain synthetic clothes are strong enough to set up a field that repels all negative ions in your immediate vicinity! Go stand on a mountain; it won't help much if you're wearing your favorite synthetic ski jacket! Without adequate negative ions, we are literally working ourselves to death and we don't even realize it . Yet the technology now exists to replace the body's load, to support the immune system, and to promote not just a long life, but a strong, vital life. With ionization (ionized water), you are now able to derive huge quantities of negatively charged ions as Hydroxyl ions in a microclustered form that will flow between cell walls and react with acid wastes that are causing energy loss, lethargy and a predisposition to almost every major illness; all in water direct from your tap. With the ionization of air you will receive ionized nitrogen and oxygen that gives itself away immediately to facilitate energy conversion and storage. The ionized nitrogen acts on your cellular communication system and dilates the blood vessels to maintain not only a strong nutrient transport system, but an efficient messaging service, allowing your body to reinstate real communication. You begin to know your own body again. The cost, when we look realistically at a future that statistically means ill health, cancer, heart disease and bodily degeneration, is incredibly small. Like the tiny negatively charged atom, this technology is easy to dismiss, but deceptively powerful. The statements enclosed herein have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Far Infrared Light For centuries, scientists have known that plants are dependent upon sunlight for photosynthesis. But, only recently has science recognized the similarities between humans and plants in their dependence upon light. Dr. Jacob Liberman, O.D., Ph.D., author of Light Medicine of the Future describes the body as a living photocell, stimulated and regulated by light. "Our lives, our health and well-being are truly dependent on the sun. The human body is nourished directly by eating foods, drinking fluids, or breathing air that has been vitalized by the sun's light energy." Today, we know that energy from the sun's rays, photons, controls vital processes in both plants and people. In humans, photons are the catalyst for the production of sugars, fats, and proteins. Photons stimulate the endocrine system, metabolic processes and enzyme reactions as well as activities in the brain. When this connection is disturbed, disorders follow. For example, when enzymes in the body's cells, which should normally be activated, fail to receive the proper wave lengths of light, they remain dormant. As a result, they cannot start up normal, cellular metabolic reactions. This translates into lower cellular energy, glandular insufficiencies and reduced ability to burn fats and toxins. Solar energy from the sun covers a broad energy band including infrared, visible light, ultra-violet, x-rays and gamma rays. Only a small amount of these solar rays are visible as colors. The greatest amount of the sun's energy output is in the infrared segment of the spectrum. This band of light is not visible but can be felt as heat. The infrared segment of the electromagnetic spectrum is divided into three segments by wave frequencies and wave lengths. Wave lengths are measured in microns (mm), which are one millionth of a meter: Near Infrared: 0.76-1.5 mm; Middle: 1.5-5.6 mm; Far: 5.6-1000 mm. A narrow spectrum between 4 to 14 microns has been shown to have particularly beneficial effects on the body. Among the total spectrum of solar rays coming from the sun, the FIR waves are the safest and the most beneficial. For example, the visible light spectrum, with very short wave lengths, is reflected away from the body. When near (NIR) waves heat organic substances the surface gets hotter than the interior, and the interior gets heated by conduction from the surface. By contrast, far-infrared penetrates deeply with a very uniform warming effect. Benefits of FIR waves All humans send and receive FIR waves. The range of infrared waves generated by the body is 3 to 50 microns. The greatest output is around 9.4, which is very close to the resonant frequency of a water molecule. This similarity makes sense since our bodies are almost 70% water. Any substances with similar resonance can absorb energy from each other easily. Consequently, when you are close to someone, you are both sending and receiving FIR energy. When heated, our planet emits FIR waves at around the 10 micron level as do most organic substances and plants. The FIR waves between 4 to 14 microns, sometimes called Vital Rays, appear to have special regenerative effects on the body. When any tissue in the body is exposed to FIR waves, whether radiated by sunlight, reflected by specially coated fabrics or ceramic panels, there is a rapid increase in warmth which can shown by thermography. This heat plus the activation of several other response mechanisms stimulates the healing processes. For example, FIR waves; - Increase blood flow by promoting dilation (expansion) of the micro-circulatory system of capillaries.
- Reduce muscle spasms as muscle fibers are heated.
- Remove toxins from the site receiving FIR waves.
- Assist in the reduction of swelling and inflammation by improving lymph flow.
- Reduce soreness through direct action on both free nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves.
- At the cellular level, researchers have discovered that specific FIR waves lengths.
- Stimulate enzyme activity.
- Promote the adhesion and osmosis of water molecules across the cellular membrane.
- Attract calcium ions to the cellular membrane.
- FIR waves reduce acidity.
Medical application FIR technology One of the reasons FIR has beneficial results in a variety of illnesses is the ability of FIR waves to remove toxins, which are often at the core of many health problems. Since humans are bio-accumulators, numerous toxins, that cannot be removed immediately after entry, are stored in our bodies. For example, when toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide or toxic substances such as lead, mercury or chlorine meet large water molecules, they are encapsulated by the clusters of water. Where these toxins are accumulated, blood circulation is blocked and cellular energy is impaired. However, when a 10 micron FIR wave is applied to these large water molecules, the water begins to vibrate. This vibration reduces the ion bonds of the atoms which are holding together the molecules of water. As the breakdown of the water molecules occurs, encapsulated gases and other toxic materials are released. Diets and exercise do work to a certain extent, but there are scientific products developed in Japan that can help you get rid of the accumulated acidic toxins more easily and effortlessly. These products work no matter how busy you are, how old you are or how lazy you may be. As with diets and exercises, the results are not overnight; however, the process is the fastest among the methods using the natural process. The problem is that the acid accumulation in our body is slow and our body adapts to it, so that we do not notice the fact that we are getting sick and old. By the time one feels pain caused by the acid accumulation, the damage is severe. One must start the process of reducing acidic wastes before the pain starts. |

Why are Negative Ions so Healthy? |

Why are Negative Ions so Healthy? When water is atomized, negative and positive charges are separated. Ions (charged particles) are formed when enough energy acts on a molecule such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, water or nitrogen to eject an electron. The displaced electron attaches itself to a nearby molecule, which then becomes a negative ion. The original molecule (minus an electron) is now a positive ion. These ions, in turn, react with dust and pollutants to form larger particles. Small negative ions (usually no more than 12 gaseous molecules clustered around a charged atom or molecule) are short-lived and highly mobile. We can find negative ions in nature. For example, molecules which are torn from the surface of water bear a negative charge (small negative ions) whereas large drops or the entire mass of water are positive. This provides an explanation for the refreshing, invigorating effect of residences close to a waterfall or spring, or even after rain. However, in the cities, in closed rooms, in cars etc., the proportion of negative ions is markedly reduced compared with undisturbed nature. According to the experts, positive ions rob us of our good senses and dispositions, while negative ions enhance them, stimulating everything from plant growth to the overall well-being of the human body.
The regulation of serotonin levels is calming and increases defenses against infection (as proven with influenza the flu) Negative ions produce an increase in hemoglobin/oxygen affinity so that the partial oxygen pressure in the blood rises but the partial dioxide pressure decreases. This results in reduced respiratory rate and enhances the metabolism of water-soluble vitamins. In addition, negative ions produce an increase in pH making body fluids more alkaline. The Evolution of BioMat Healing It's time for a brief history lesson. The Greeks in 400BC thrived as the greatest civilization on Earth. They conquered lands, built great halls of learning, and celebrated life and love with their many deities. One of their favorite deities was Dionysus. The God of wine represents not only its intoxicating power, but also its social and beneficial influences. He is viewed as the promoter of civilization, a lawgiver, and lover of peace, as well as the patron deity of agriculture and the arts. He was also known as the Liberator, freeing one from one's normal self, by madness or ecstasy. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of courting Dionysus is the hangover. In order to relieve its citizens of the dreadful morning after Greek Healers found a curing gemstone. A curious purple rock they bequeathed Amethystos 'The Amethyst' literally translated as 'Not Intoxicated'. These early physicians would lay patients on beds of amethyst, cover them with blankets of woven amethyst, sit them in caves where amethyst was present in the walls, or crush the stones into a powder and mix them into an elixir to be taken internally. The results were a calming, grounding and soothing affect delivered to their patients. A few centuries later, in the east, holy men and physicians made it known the healing qualities of amethyst were characterized as purifying, pacifying and transitional. Amethyst has the ability to transform lower energies into higher. Amethyst is known to calm and protect the mind. It soothes those who have engaged in constant rigorous mental activity. It has been deemed "nature's tranquilizer" by many healers because of it's effectiveness in relaxing not only the mind but also the nervous system. Those who wear amethyst jewelry and who have been recommended to wear this stone for healing purposes have done so because of its tranquil qualities and its ability to reduce negativity and alleviate anxiety. Amethyst was identified as a crystal that functions favorably in clearing certain types of blockage and in aligning the Chakras. By transforming energies on all levels amethyst also has the ability to balance and stabilize energies located within certain Chakra areas. Amethyst is related to and found to heal and align ailments of the 6th and 7th Chakras, which are the Third Eye or Brow (6th) and the Crown (7th). Amethyst aides the 6th Chakra, Third Eye, by opening and heightening awareness. Its calming qualities help to awaken and ease stress in this area. It helps to also heighten perspective and allows development of strong introspection (inner-self view). The 7th Chakra, or the Crown controls the energies used in any mental activity. Amethyst helps to relieve strain or tension in this area. It is considered a helpful aide in meditation and in the facilitation of psychic visual enhancement. It's tranquil sobering effect allows those who are energetic to relax. It also is a cure for insomnia and nightmares. As the Greeks gave way to the Romans, the Huns and finally the Europeans of the later centuries, modern science took apart the Amethyst. It is a form of SiO2 (Silicone Oxide) gets its predominantly violet color from alternate layers of right-handed and left-handed quartz. Its hardness is rated a 7 on the Mohs scale with 1 being Talc (Chalk) and 10 being a diamond. This explains why it fractures quite easily and that it is rare to find large cuts of Amethyst Jewelry anywhere in the world. Thus Amethyst has an irregular pattern in the quartz world and produces some yet scientifically unexplained characteristics with its refraction, conduction and emission of light. Recently it has been discovered that the violet color is attributed to certain iron constituents in connection with a naturally occurring ability to store and radiate light over time. Maybe scientists found out what the early healers already knew. Modern Times On December 13, 1958 America sent Gordo into space in the Jupiter AM-13 program. Able and Baker went into space on May 28, 1959 in the Jupiter AM-18 mission. What scientists learned from these historic flights was that conducted heat alone was not enough to keep these monkeys happy in the extreme cold encountered in the vacuum of space. In order to simulate the sunshine encountered on earth scientists designed a suit capable of producing Far Infrared Radiation to insulate the apes on future space missions. The apes came back more vibrant with better physiology then there predecessors. Far Infrared Radiation (FIR), what is it about this energy source our bodies enjoy. Why is it that we feel so good in the warm sun light? What makes us feel good when another human touches us and we feel the heat and warmth of their touch? Far Infrared Radiation is that part of the electromagnetic spectrum with longer wavelengths. The visible light spectrum ranges from .4 microns to .7 microns in wavelength. Ultraviolet, X-Rays and Gamma-Rays have much shorter wavelengths then visible light and cause destruction of organic molecules with exposures of any duration. Near Infrared and Medium Infrared Light ranges from .74 microns to 4.0 microns in wavelength and is visible to some animals but is invisible to the human eye. Far Infrared Light ranges from 4.0 microns to 400 microns and is harmless to organic molecules at the lower end of this range. Beyond 400 microns are the Ultra-High Infrared, Microwave and Radio Wavelengths. How does FIR transfer into heat? The laws of thermodynamics state there are three ways heat can be transferred. - Conduction - Heat traveling from an area of high temperature to an area of low temperature within an object.
- Convection - Heat circulation in an atmosphere of water or gas.
- Radiation - Electromagnetic transfer even within a vacuum.
Radiation is different from the other two because with Conduction and Convection the medium must be heated before transfer may begin. Radiation transmits heat directly and spontaneously. Radiation does not need a carrier. How does FIR create such a deep heating in the body? Molecules that form an object have different vibration and rotation cycles depending on many subatomic principles. These rotations and transmutations of Carbon and Oxygen containing and organic molecules in the body tend to resonate at regular cycles. This resonation is much like the frequency of a swing moving back and forth. When these molecules encounter an FIR wavelength of a resonant frequency it is much like giving that swing a push at exactly the right moment to project it further or make it more energetic. This phenomenon is called 'resonant absorption'. Compounds containing Nitrogen or Chlorine do not resonate at the same frequencies as FIR and thus do not heat up or become more energetic as they encounter FIR. The BioMat Produces FIR in a wavelength from 5 to 15 microns. By observing the chart above it is apparent most compounds in the body cannot resonate with low or medium infrared nor infrared much above the range emitted by the BioMat. Because of the Resonant Absorption property of FIR the heating penetration is much deeper then through absorption and convection and greater still if the FIR source is in contact with the body as with the BioMat. So what are the Physiological effects and health benefits of laying on the BioMat and receiving FIR Therapy? 1. Stimulation of the Autonomic Nervous System .....a. The Autonomic Nervous System controls homeostasis, that is the constancy of the body i.e. Heart pumping, body temperature, breathing, volume of fluids etc. .....b. Symptoms of ANS malfunctioning include, headache, dizziness, weakness, insomnia, cold body parts, overactive sweating, fatigue, inflammation and cancer. .....c. Much like acupuncture or acupressure, FIR entering through all of the conductivity points at once energizes the ANS and helps to remove any blockages helping to insure open communication pathways between the brain and all of the organs of the body. 2. Stimulation of the Circulatory System .....a. The circulatory system provides nutrients to all of the cells through Arteries, Veins, Lungs and Capillaries and other organs. .....b. Symptoms of a poor circulatory system are high blood pressure, arrhythmia, shortness of breath, and pain or loss of feeling in the extremities .....c. By taking the deep heating effect of FIR, capillaries dilate and blood circulates more freely. This in turn prevents metabolic disorder such as blood stasis, activates tissue cells, activates secretion of enzymes and frees toxins and metabolic wastes for excretion. 3. Stimulation of Sweat .....a. Sweat helps to secrete toxins from subcutaneous fat layers under the skin .....b. Symptoms include cancer, pain, muscle tightness and fatigue .....c. Sweat helps to secrete heavy metals, carcinogens, food processing agents, lactic and free fatty acids, and surplus salt trapped in subcutaneous fat layers. This is especially important for people unable to exercise. 4. Other benefits in using The BioMat and FIR Therapy .....a. Reduction of Stress due to increased circulation and downtime used while spending time on the mat. .....b. Relief of Fatigue due to increased circulation and emission of lactic acid from muscle tissue. .....c. Relief of Stiff Muscles due to increased circulation and secretion of lactic acid from muscle tissue. .....d. Soft Tissue Repair due to molecular level rebuilding processes increased enhancing DNA synthesis through all stages of repair .....e. Relief from Arthritis due to increased circulation around joint areas an increased metabolic rate and downtime allowing the body to furnish building components for cartilage repair. .....f. Immune System Boost due to simulation of infection causing an autoimmune reaction. .....g. Lower Blood Pressure due to the increased area of capillary, arteries and veins. .....h. Weight Control due to the breakdown of toxins, salts, acids and lipids stored in subcutaneous fat layers. What about Negative Ions? Negative ions are what make you feel so good. Positive ions make you feel slow and sluggish. Why is this? What are negative ions? When we talk about electricity, a wire for instance that is attached to two terminals of a battery electrons will flow across the wire from the negative terminal to the positive. The positive ions of the wire stay put while the electrons jump from positive ion to positive ion across the wire. The electrons or negative ions move, while the positive ions stay put. Active vs. sluggish. In the column of atmosphere surrounding the earth cosmic rays from the sun strike the atmosphere and ionize the gasses. This means that the gasses break up into negative ions and positive charged particles. Electrically, the sky has positive potential with respect to the earth's ground potential; therefore, the positive ions will be attracted to the ground and the negative ions will be traveling upwards toward the clouds in the sky. Near the surface of the ground, there are more negative ions than positive ions, because the positive ions are dissipated by the negative ground nearby. Nature's air cleaning system Both positive ions and negative ions attach to pollutants or dust in the air, and they are either dragged down to the ground if the positive ions are attached to them or they are pulled up to the clouds if negative ions are attached to them. This is nature's way of cleansing the air. In the highly polluted urban areas, cosmic rays cannot come down very low because of the thick layers of pollution. Therefore, there are not enough negative ions to clean the air. It is a vicious cycle. High in the mountains and near the ocean there is a high concentration of negative ions. The counts of negative ions are expressed in terms of the number of ions in a cubic centimeter (cc). Up in the mountains and near the ocean the negative ion counts are in the hundreds per cc, while in the city, the counts are generally in the single digits. Effects of ions on health and mood It is reported that positive ions create depressed moods while negative ions provide euphoria. There are several brands of household negative ion generators on the market for this very reason. They are trying to simulate mountain top atmospheric condition by shooting out high counts of negative ions into the room. One thing that the users of the negative ion generators notice is that their room walls get dirty because the negative ions cling to the dirt and dust in the air and they are carried to the walls which are positive potential relative to the minus ions. One way to look at it is that the dirt goes to the walls instead of going into your lungs. One will notice also that when the BioMat is left on all the time the negative ions will stick to dust particles and plate out on the walls of a room. There are a couple of theories as to why negative ions give euphoric feelings while positive ions create depression. The first theory is that negative ions can move about in the body very freely. Since a negative ion means an extra electron attached to a molecule, the movement of a negative ion means the movement of an electron, which is easy. Fast moving electrons give a molecular level massage and loosen up particles stuck in some places in the body. Positive ions are molecules with one electron missing. They provide electric fields, but the movement of an electron "hole" is slow. In other words it provides tension, but the relief of tension by the movement of an ion (electron hole) is quite slow. When ions travel through your body, they will travel through the path of highest conductivity. High conductivity points correspond to the acupuncture points. So, when these ions travel through your body, they enter and leave your body through the acupuncture points, stimulating the body. Independent from your nerve network, there is an electric conduction network in your body. If there were no high conduction network path, traveling electrons would disturb the nerve system. It is similar to a lightning rod on a building, protecting the building's plumbing and electrical wires from lightning. A traveling electron is stimulating substances along this conduction network. Acupuncture with needles also does the same thing. The second theory is that negative ions increase alkalinity in the body while the positive ions increase acidity. As we know the water molecules are split into H+ and OH-. Negative ions will neutralize H+ ions and the remaining OH- ions will ionize normal unionized alkaline minerals. The net effect is to increase the alkalinity of the body. The reverse effects, i.e., the acidification of the body would be achieved with the positive ions. These ions eventually leave the body. If they accumulate, you will get an electric shock when you touch a metallic object. The best such example is that when you are on a dry area walking on the carpet with rubber sole shoes on, you build up static electricity in your body. Then, if you touch a door knob, you get shocked. Ions and 'free radicals' cannot be stored in your body without changing your body's electric potential. Eventually they leave your body. But before they leave, they can change your body chemistry. How do Negative Ions Change your Body Chemistry? Each living cell is surrounded by a membrane which separates the world within the cell from its exterior. In this membrane there are channels, through which the cell communicates with its surroundings. Those channels consist of single molecules or complexes of molecules and have the ability to allow passage of charged atoms, that is ions. The regulation of ion channels influences the life of the cell and its functions under normal and pathological conditions. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1991 was awarded for the discoveries of the function of ion channels. The two German cell physiologists Erwin Neher and Bert Sakmann have together developed a technique that allows the registration of the incredibly small electrical currents (amounting to a picoampere - 10-12A) that passes through a single ion channel. The technique is unique in that it records how a single channel molecule alters its shape and in that way controls the flow of current within a time frame of a few millionths of a second. This alteration of shape and consequential admittance of negative ions provides the following: - It provides for a molecular massage adjusting the size and shape of each and every cell in the body as it admits ions through cell channels.
- It provides for the admittance of negative ions and the recombination of these negative ions with positive free radicals. The free radicals are thus neutralized and easily excreted from the cell into either sweat or into the blood stream to be processed through the Liver and Kidneys and eventually out through urine or feces.

Janice wasn't flattered when the German shopkeeper congratulated her on the baby she looked about to deliver. For despite her severely swollen abdomen, Janice was not pregnant. She had advanced, multi-drug resistant peritoneal cancer with an accumulation of fluid in her abdominal cavity. Janice had been told she was in the end stages of an eight-year battle that had started with ovarian cancer and metastasized into liver, colon and bladder cancer. Instead of preparing to bring new life into the world, Janice wanted to die, to put an end to her constant pain, suffering and hopelessness. Her doctors in the United States had given up on her. She was frankly sick of it all, ready to let her will ebb away and surrender. But at a friend's pleading, Janice made one last try at a cure by going to the Link St. George in Bad Aibling, Germany, outside of Munich. The clinic, known to English-speaking people as St. George Hospital, is nestled in the foothills of the Alps ,treats 2,500 German and 2,500 foreign patients a year and has developed a widespread, word-of-mouth following.
Friedrich Douwes, M.D.,of Klinik St. Georg has great success using a "synergy of treatments"--with special emphases is on the use of heat from far infrared radiation and direct electrical current as mainstays of his cancer-killing strategy.
Prantseck Castle: the International House of Klinik St. Georg, near the Bavarian Alps Janice told me her story three weeks after she started treatment at the clinic. With a joyous smile on her beautiful face--and a stomach now flat--she pronounced, "This is my favorite place in the whole world. I just love it here!" She said she was completely free of pain, and her energy had been restored. She received treatment according to a standard Klinik St. Georg cancer protocol: a week of detoxification and the strengthening of the immune system with diet and nutritional supplements, followed by two weeks of localized hyperthermia treatment (see sidebar) and low-dose chemotherapy. Hyperthermia involves raising the temperature of the body area surrounding a malignant tumor, or in many cases, the whole body itself, to levels of heat and for periods of time lethal to the cancerous tissue but not injurious to other cells. In Janice's case, the abdominal area was per fused with the chemotherapy agents cisplatin and carboplatin during hyperthermia treatment. Because the treatment heated the abdominal cavity to 107 degrees Fahrenheit (41.7 degrees Celsius) for one hour, the chemotherapy was able to penetrate the membranes of the cancer cells much more easily. Thus Janice needed only half the normal dose of chemotherapy and suffered none of the usual side effects. About two months after treatment began, Janice informed me that she was continuing to improve and felt better than she had in years. Shortly thereafter, she no longer showed any sign of disease whatsoever. Her CA 125 cancer markers (a blood test measurement of the level of antigens produced by ovarian cancer cells) dropped from above 2,500 to the low 100s and her health is now perfect. Janice says that, from talking with long-term cancer survivors she has met at KlinikSt. Georg, and from her own experiences, she is convinced there is hope for permanent remission. Ideally, before persons with cancer seek chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, they should consult an alternative or complementary physician such as Professor Friedrich R. Douwes, M.D., Medical Director and founder of Klinik St. Georg. As an oncologist who integrates holistic with conventional approaches, Dr. Douwes is widely renowned for his successes. He has published numerous papers on alternative cancer treatments and is currently Vice President of the German Society of Oncology. Clinic patients have the opportunity to initiate detoxification, nutritional/herbal supplementation for immune modulation, exercise, positive thinking practices and psychotherapy, as well as hyperthermia and/or electrotherapy treatment (see sidebar). Dr. Douwes is bound by the canons of German medical ethics to also advise his German patients as to standard conventional chemotherapies, and feels obligated to inform his international patients of every option open to them. But if his patients decline chemo, then he becomes their biological therapist. What a difference this approach is to that of many conventional oncologists who scare their patients with treatment imperatives that include threatening prognoses: "If you don't do this surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, you're going to die in so many months." Building immunity One of the long-term cancer survivors I met in Bad Aibling is Friedhelm, a former schoolteacher who couldn't wait to tell me his story. We talked on a couch in "Professor" Dr. Douwes's waiting room. Friedhelm was diagnosed in May 1993 with a non-small-cell lung tumor 12 centimeters by 6 centimeters (about 4.7 inches by 2.4 inches) in size. This type of cancer usually has a five-year survival rate of only 10%. Doctors told Friedhelm: "Go for chemo tomorrow. If you're very lucky, you'll survive six months. If not, three months." The next day, Friedhelm said, he headed straight for Klinik St. Georg. He knew of Dr. Douwes's reputation and the effectiveness of his therapeutic protocols because his brother had gone to university with the doctor. In Friedhelm's words, his immune status at the start of treatment was "nothing, absolutely terrible. "Dr. Douwes told him he couldn't start chemotherapy right away. He could not withstand the poisons. Like most patients, he had to build his body up first. Thus, for two weeks, he was given nutritional supplements and natural immune system modulators. From May to September 1993 Friedhelm had two cycles of low-dose chemotherapy with hyperthermia. Then in October he had radiation in Munich. Nothing more. By the end of treat menthe was cancer-free, and has been ever since. His other medical doctors are astonished and consider the case unexplainable. He suffered no hair loss from the chemotherapy, no nausea. In fact, except for a mildly reduced white blood cell count that his doctors attribute to the radiation in Munich, he had no side effects whatsoever. "Most people call it a wonder. I think it's a result of this therapy," says Friedhelm. He points out that he now has more hair than he did ten years ago. He also observes that "in the past, before health insurance, if you were poor, you died soon. Now, if you're not informed, you die. "Dr. Douwes says that killing malignant tumors is usually not difficult, and a synergy of treatments works best for that. The biggest challenge comes about afterwards, to keep tumors from coming back once patients leave the clinic and resume a normal lifestyle. To prevent their reoccurrence one must keep the immune system strong with diet, exercise, nutritional supplementation and especially a positive mental attitude. Friedhelm has taken this advice to heart. He is on a regular supplementation program and visits Dr. Douwes faithfully four times a year for reassessment and cancer screening (early detection). He says he retired from teaching and fulfilled a life-long dream of riding his motorcycle down Route 66 in the U.S. While in Bad Aibling, I met patient after patient who would not have considered undergoing more chemotherapy unless it was low-dose chemo in combination with hyperthermia or electrotherapy. Not only do these treatments reduce the amount of chemotherapy needed, but they also markedly reduce side effects from chemotherapy and radiation, and they allow for achieving much greater results. Dr. Douwes backs this bold statement by referring to many oncology studies, both in the laboratory and in actual patients. Another one of Dr. Douwes' many success stories is Les M., an engineer from California who had prostate cancer. From his professional education he brings a skeptical, inquiring, scientific perspective to viewing various situations. Before Les came to Klinik St. Georg for transurethral prostate hyperthermia treatment, he carefully reviewed the literature on different treatments. He chose the clinic after learning that local-region radio-wave hyperthermia has produced "fabulous results" (whereas the U.S. study of hyperthermia using microwaves caused patients agonizing urethral pain and made U.S. doctors thereafter shun the procedure). Les was also impressed to learn how sophisticated the clinic's method of determining efficacy of treatment is. The traditional Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test gives a high rate of false negatives (about 30%). Les had a particular form of aggressive form of prostate cancer that is not revealed by elevated PSAs. Klinik St. Georg also uses the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique to determine whether cancer cells are still circulating in the bloodstream. I met with Les just before he was to go in for his first treatment. He sat in a comfortable upholstered chair with flexible radio-receiving plates affixed to each buttock. With local anesthesia he had a probe containing a tiny radio transmitter introduced through a transnatural catheter into his enlarged prostate. Unlike the American protocol which used high-energy microwaves that burned both cancerous and noncancerous tissue alike, the Klinik St. Georg treatment employs shortwave radio transmissions. These heat the prostate area to between 113 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit and adversely affect only malignant cells. At times Les felt some discomfort during the treatment, as if he had to urinate, but otherwise the three hour process was not traumatic, and he was asleep for much of the time. I interviewed Les fifteen minutes post-therapy, after his catheter was removed and he had urinated without pain or any burning sensation. He was positively joyful and downright playful. I received a call from Les two months later, just as I was finishing writing this article. He had to tell me that he had just visited his previous two conventional oncologists. They performed the ultrasound imaging and digital rectal palpation that had revealed his cancer in the first place (later confirmed by biopsy). They found nothing: there was no evidence of cancer left. They could not perform a follow-up biopsy because there was no mass left to target. A trailblazer in oncology Dr. Douwes is a large, muscular bear of a man. He reminds me of a middle linebacker from the National Football League, or one of those undeniably self-confident athletes who says to his opponent, "You think you're tough. So bring it on. Show me what you've got." That's the doctor's attitude toward cancer, and his upbeat optimism sets the tone for the entire clinic. For the most part, clinic staff and patients alike are happy and at times ebullient. The setting probably helps: the clinic rivals any five-star hotel for comfort and accommodations, quality of food, service and a majestic view. The only morose patents saw were those who had just recently begun treatment. I assumed that they, too, would be soon infected by the good cheer freely shared among patients in the dining room and group therapy rooms. A patient with prostate cancer said to me that Klinik St. Georg "is the only cancer clinic I've ever been to where people laugh. "Dr. Douwes was not always so upbeat. Following his training in oncology at medical schools in both the U.S. and Germany, he served as head physician of the oncology department at the University of Goumlttingen, where he got severely discouraged." I decided after 10 years," he said "to either quit medicine or to become a landscape gardener, because I was so disappointed about the results in clinical oncology. "I had my first fight with the faculty after I was supposed to publish a paper about patients with non-small cell cancer of the lung. We had a double-blind study; one placebo group and one group that received Adriamycin, Cytoxan and Oncovin. The results were that from the placebo group, the median survival rate was 9.6 months and in the treated group it was 13.4 months, and this was statistically significant. I was supposed to publish it because the pharmaceutical companies gave us a grant. "I told them that this maybe statistically significant, but it was baloney. What does it mean? Three or four months. If you take into account that these people in treatment survived this experience only four months longer, then I was not going to publish it. They had a lousy life quality; they had to be hospitalized most of the time; they had more chemotherapy, more blood transfusions, and we actually stole several months of their lives from them."They told me that if I wasn't going to publish the paper because it's insignificant, then they would cut our grants. This was the minute when I quit and said, 'This is it. I cannot do it anymore because this is not the way to treat these people. So I slowly adopted complementary methods into my medicine besides conventional and still stay with conventional medicine because St. Georg is a fully-licensed hospital. All major insurances pay and I somehow had to balance it and, therefore, we call it integrative medicine. We have practiced this now for 15 years." "As soon as I adopted these methods, I became more and more successful, especially when I had the opportunity to introduce hyperthermia into our treatment and protocol. This was in 1983 and 1984, and my mentor was an American surgeon, the late Dr. Harry Levine Also, there was Dr. Rudi Falk from Toronto, also deceased. They were the first I met with experience in hyperthermia. Later we made our own machines, and at the moment I think we are now the leading such hospital in the world because we have all varieties of hyperthermia." Hyperthermia and electrotherapy WHAT IS Hyperthermia? Two forms of hyperthermia are practiced at Klinik St. Georg: whole body and local region. Both involve heating the body to a temperature usually between 107 to 111 degrees Fahrenheit for one to three hours. Both require patients be put on a detoxification protocol for a week prior to therapy, during which time all vital sign sand organ functions are monitored and evaluated. Of special concern are heart, lung, kidney and liver functions. Individualized hyperthermia treatments are then initiated. A patient is continually monitored while receiving hyperthermia in the whole-body chamber employing far infrared radiation. There are several ways high temperatures kill cancer cells and potentiate the effects of herbal and nutritional anti-cancer remedies as well as chemotherapy agents. One crucial way is that heat increases the cellular metabolic rate, breaking down glucose to lactic acid and thus decreasing pH to very low levels. This acidic body state, called acidosis, leads to hypoxemia, or low oxygen supply, which deprives the cancer cells of oxygen and leads to their death. To enhance the cancer-cell-killing hypoxemia process, Klinik St. Georg's Dr. Douwes often induces a temporary state of hyperglycemia during whole-body hyperthermia, bringing blood sugar levels up to 300 milligrams per milliliter by adding glucose intravenously. High acidity and hypoxemia also damage the vessels that nourish the cancer cells, thus choking them off from fresh blood supply. This effect is enhanced because, compared to normal cells, cancer cells have a primitive form of blood supply that is not able to disperse heat as readily. Another way heat works besides increasing cell permeability is to damage the membranes, protein sand enzymes of cancer cells, making them much more vulnerable to anti-cancer agents--including herbal and nutritional agents, chemotherapy and radiation. Both in laboratory conditions and living humans (in vitro and in vivo),studies have documented that, after exposure to high levels of heat, cancer cells die faster at a fraction of the usual dosages of chemotherapy and radiation. At Klinik St. Georg, whole-body and local-region hyperthermia are applied in combination with complementary methods. Localregion hyperthermia is used for cancer of the breast and uterus; pulmonary and hepatic tumors and their metastases (spreading to other parts of the body); cancer of the pancreas; neuro- endocrine tumors; cancer of the stomach, bowel and bladder; ear, nose and throat tumors; brain tumors; lymph node metastases and local lymphomas; and skin cancers. Woman patient receiving electro therapy for a tumor on the neck. Brain cancers respond especially well to localized hyperthermia--85% benefit from this type of treatment. And as brain tumors shrink, healthy brain tissue regrows to fill the space. Often, no residual neurological deficits remain after recovery from the brain cancers. Using local-region hyperthermia, Dr. Douwes claims that 87% of pancreatic cancers treated at the clinic have gone into at least partial remission. With conventional therapies, pancreatic cancers are almost always fatal within a year. In local-region hyperthermia, the heat is only directed regionally and straight to the tissue or organ affected by the tumor. This is accomplished by passing computer-controlled electromagnetic short radio waves (not microwaves) from a transmitter through the patient to a receiving plate. These are positioned around the body region affected by the tumor. Temperatures ranging from 107 to 111 degrees Fahrenheit are maintained for 60 to 90 minutes. Temperature is checked either directly from inside the tumor or from outside using a radiometer. The patient is usually wide awake for the procedure, needing no anesthesia--except when treating prostate cancer, which requires local anesthesia. In these cases, a radio transmitter is inserted through a ureter catheter directly into the prostate, and temperatures of as high as 158 degrees Fahrenheit are applied for one hour. Because cancerous tissue is denser than normal and radio waves are more readily absorbed by denser tissue and converted into heat, local hyperthermia is self-focusing onto areas of malignancy. Again, because malignant tissue has a relatively primitive blood supply system, blood cannot circulate freely through and around a tumor; thus it tends to hold the heat. After local-region hyperthermia treatment, malignant tumors (unlike healthy tissues) form peculiarly characteristic protein structures on their cell surfaces. They are called heat shock proteins (one example is "HSP 72"), and they trigger Natural Killer cells of the body's immune system to attack the tumor cells. Doctors at Klinik St. Georg have treated numerous cases of breast and colon cancer locally and have observed the quite remarkable disappearance of distant metastases. This is evidence that localized hyperthermia induces a type of specific immunity to metastatic cancer cells that have been affected by the process. Whole-body hyperthermia is especially appropriate for advanced cancers that have a propensity to metastasize, such as breast, prostate and ovarian (which often spread to the lungs and liver) and lymphomas. Dr. Douwes says hyperthermia allows lymphomas to "melt away like butter in the sun." The treatment also has marked effect on pain: within two treatments pain is usually reduced so dramatically that even patients on high doses of morphine no longer need their pain medications. For the whole-body procedure, the anesthetized patient lies on a standard-sized hospital bed supporting shiny reflective, insulated "tent" (sometimes called a whole-body cabin) with an array of infrared-A lamps. Infrared light, if humans could see it, would appear just beyond the red side of the rainbow, the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. While we cannot see infrared light, we do experience it as heat. During treatment, monitors are hooked up to measure the patient's heart rate, respiration, temperature, oxygen, carbon dioxide, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and EKG activity. Intravenous tubes are also attached to provide water, nutrients, anesthesia and in some cases chemotherapy. Hyperthermia for prostate cancer. After a local anesthetic is administered, a probe containing a tiny radio transmitter is introduced through a transient into the prostate. Short-wave radio transmissions heat the prostate area to between 113 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit and adversely affect only malignant cells. Typically, it takes one to one-and-a-half hours under the lamps to raise the body temperature from its normal 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) to almost 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit or a bit above. Infrared-A light penetrates the ski one-half to one centimeter, going into the capillary bed and heating the blood. The patient is kept at these elevated temperatures for two to two-and-a-half hours, after which there is a cool-down period for one-and-a-half to two hours--until body temperature returns to normal. The whole-body procedures usually done twice a week for up to three weeks, depending upon the severity of the cancer. WHAT IS Electrotherapy? Klinik St. Georg has successfully used electrotherapy, also known as electrochemical tumor therapy, Galvanotherapie and electro-cancer treatment (ECT), as a stand alone treatment in hundreds of cases, with some truly spectacular results. ECT was developed in Europe by a Swedish professor and the Austrian doctor Rudolf Pekar. The therapy employs galvanic electrical stimulation to treat tumors and skin cancers. Marian Reichl, M.D., who heads this department at the clinic, says that ECT is used most often as an adjunct with whole-body or local-region hyperthermia. Using both treatments, millions or even billions of cancer cells can be killed--and when killing cancer cells, more is obviously better. This calls for a note of caution, however. The dead cancer cells are highly toxic, which is why a healthy lymphatic system is crucial to transport their detritus for efficient elimination from the body. An ECT session resembles anelectro-acupuncture treatment, but with some major differences. Using local anesthesia, the physician inserts a positively-charged platinum, gold or silver needle into the center of the tumor and places negatively-charged needles around the tumor, no farther than 1.5 centimeters apart. Alternatively, superficial patch electrodes are placed on the skin, or a combination of superficial skin patches and needles are used. Voltages of 6 to 15 volts are used, dependent upon tumor size. The most common size of tumor treated is about 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter. Tumors as large as the 5 to 10 cubic centimeter range have been killed with ECT. To enhance the cancer-cell-killing power of ECT, sometimes small amounts of chemotherapy agents are applied to the skin and driven into the tumor by a kind of sweating effect of the electric current ("iontophoresis"). For skin cancers, current is passed between positively-charged needles placed underneath the base of the tumor and a negatively-charged skin patch commonly applied to the surface. ECT works by influencing the acid/alkaline (pH) levels within the tumor and causing electrolysis of its tissue, which is more susceptible to direct current than normal tissue. The pH change depolarizes cancer cell membranes and causes tumors to be gently destroyed. After treatment, for a couple of days the treated area will be inflamed as the body breaks down the waste of dead cancer cells. Then scar tissue forms where once there was tumor. The ECT process also appears to generate heat shock proteins around the cancer cells, inducing cell-specific immunity. This process triggers Natural Killer cells. In some cases, this has also provoked tumor death in distant metastases. ECT is used for small breast tumors, isolated nodes of the axillary (armpit), supra clavicular (above the collarbone) and thorax (chest) areas; tumors of the ear, nose and throat area, especially after radiation and chemotherapy; skin cancers; gynecological tumors; and soft-tissue tumors. "There are no other treatments I know," Dr. Douwes says, "that have such a high specificity to kill and inactivate cancer as hyperthermia and electrotherapy." These two methods form what Dr. Douwes calls "the new strategy," which he anticipates will become a mainstay of conventional cancer therapy in the near future. "They have few side effects and are absolutely cancer specific."Dr. Douwes showed me a study by the European Society for Hyper thermic Oncology on the five-year survival rates of patients with malignant melanoma. Only 28% of those treated with radiation alone survived five years, whereas in the group treated with both radiation and hyperthermia, 46% were alive after five years. Keep in mind that these studies were performed by conventional oncologist who added only hyperthermia to their standard treatment protocols. Nothing was done to support their patients' well-being and immune systems. Unlike Klinik St. Georg, they did not use detoxification regimens, biological dentistry, special diets, nutritional supplements, exercise programs like yoga and swimming, session sin the hot tub and mud baths, lymphatic drainage massage, and visits with a staff psychologist for positive imaging. They were able to nearly double five-year survival rates for melanoma patients by using hyperthermia once week with conventional radiation treatment. In another trial with late-stage, therapy-resistant ovarian cancer patients who had undergone multiple previous courses of chemotherapy (in some cases up to eight), 69.2% responded positively to a combination of chemotherapy and hyperthermia, and 15.5% went into remission. In a Klinik St. Georg trial, 36 patients with advanced multi-drug-resistant breast cancer were treated with whole-body hyperthermia, chemotherapy, anti-hormone treatment and local-region hyperthermia. The positive response rate was 66.4%, of whom 13 patients (36.1%) went into remission. No change was noted in 11 patients (30.5%).In vitro studies performed by Doctors Douwes and Jurij Bogovic of Klinik St. Georg have documented that cancer cells treated with a group of chemo agents showed an exponential increase in anti-tumor efficiency when combined synergistically with hyperthermia. Dr. Douwes says that patients who do best are those on a comprehensive biological program, which includes proper diet, nutritional supplementation and exercise. Chemotherapy and hyperthermia are applied if necessary. But do not get the impression that hyperthermia is effective only when used with chemotherapy or radiation: it is also used to potentiate the effects of various nutritional and herbal anti-cancer remedies. One aspect of the clinic that Dr. Douwes says that he is expanding and always improving is the use of herbals and nutritional supplements to target cancers and boost the immune system. Recent research has revealed that plant-based phytochemicals modify the permeability of cellular membranes, thus allowing nutrients to enter and be metabolized within healthy cells, while making cancer cells more pervious to attack from outside. Klinik St. Georg has long used alkylglycerolson all patients for this very purpose. Dr. Douwes uses Ecomer Alkylglycerol exclusively. The clinic also employs many other supplements, including thymus protein, vitamin C, selenium, Coenzyme Q10, mistletoe, high-dose antioxidants and enzymes to enhance immune response. One patient cured of lung cancer observes, "In the past ,before health insurance, if you were poor, you died soon. Now, if you're not informed, you die." Dr. Douwes has started using two new lines of products to complement his standard therapies. One is the Natural Herbals line of Chinese herbal formulas. These are derived from remedies that have been proven in China to be efficacious reportedly in 83% of 400,000 patients. The other is Nutri-zyme from American Nutriceuticals. This formula combines protein-digesting enzymes with other immune stimulants and can strip the sheaths (made of fibrin polygluco protein) from around cancer cells, rendering them more vulnerable to attack. It is likely that, used in combination with hyperthermia, several of these products may be able to virtually supplant conventional chemotherapy agents in some cases.
